About the project

Lightmotif‘s OP2 is a 5-axis laser machine tool designed for surface texturing and micromachining on complex 3D curved workpieces. Whilst designing the enclosure for the OP2, the design team was challenged to create an aesthetic that would both communicate the innovativeness of the core technology and also make the new product stand out from the crowd. At the same time, the design would need to seamlessly blend into the cleanroom environment in which these machines operate. The result is a prestigious machine that offers great workpiece accessibility due to its large modular opening doors.

From Design Concept to Production-Ready Machine

For Lightmotif, we translated the industrial design concept into a fully engineered, technically manufacturable product. Our objective was to stay as close as possible to the original design vision while ensuring feasibility for production.

Engineering and Realization of the Machine

To bring the machine into production, we transformed the design concept into a technically feasible engineering solution. During this phase, both the structural frame and the sheet metal enclosure were developed in detail. The machine features an intelligent two-level access system: integrated sliding doors for quick operations and large hinged outer doors that provide optimal access to the working area.

The enclosure was manufactured by one of our sheet metal production partners. Before the coating process, we thoroughly inspected and assembled the first prototype. This allowed us to verify that all components fit correctly and functioned as intended. Any required modifications could be implemented more easily at this stage, before the parts received a durable powder-coated finish.

The machine utilizes a highly powerful laser for material processing. To ensure operator safety, the enclosure incorporates a specially designed laser labyrinth within the sheet metal construction. This feature prevents harmful laser radiation from escaping the machine.

In the final phase, the complete prototype, including all internal components, was assembled and tested together with the client. The insights gained during this testing phase serve as the foundation for any further optimizations required before moving into series production.
